EMBRACE YOUR BREATH

Most of the time we are not conscious of our breathing, because we don’t have to be. Our breath is under the control of our autonomic nervous system that also regulates our heart rate and temperature which maintains homeostasis and balance. It is only when breathing becomes difficult or when we need more of it, do we become aware of its importance.

 

The skill of simply watching the breath might seem simple but before we start controlling it, first we have to learn to get to know it, make friends with it and establish a relationship with it.

 

If you’re like most people you probably only ever took notice of your breath if you were going through something intense or if for some reason it became difficult to breathe. It’s amazing how much we take this basic life-giving function for granted. But that’s the thing, the breath is far more interesting than a basic inhalation and exhalation that keeps us alive. The breath is like a whole rich language that we can understand, communicate with and express through.

 

We can build on our breathing vocabulary and use it to create a truly meaningful life, a life of purpose and intent.

Breath awareness is a mindfulness practice and is the first step in breaking out of habitual patterns that stand in the way of accessing our potential. The more breath awareness we have, the more benefits we can gain from all the conscious breathing exercises that follow.

Before we practice specific techniques, we have to master some fundamental building blocks. Awareness, Relaxation and Energy are the basic foundational pillars of conscious breathing. Once we have a handle on these, we can begin to practice the Basic Breathing Skills.
