The Box Breath: Breathing for calm & focus

The Box Breath: Breathing for calm & focus

“The Box Breath” breathing technique boosts your immune system, keeps your lungs healthy and gives you a sense of calm.

In this practice we are breaking the breath down into four parts:

  1. The inhale
  2. The pause
  3. The exhale
  4. The pause

Each element is of equal length. We breathe in for a count of 4, pause for a count of 4, exhale for a count of 4, and pause
for a count of 4.

Preparation:

  • Get comfortable in a chair.
  • Put your feet on the ground and feel your body in the chair.
  • Place your hands on your lap in a way that is comfortable for you. (This can also be done lying down.)
  • Practice breath awareness – feeling your breath in your body, feeling the breath as you breathe in and breathe
    out.

Practice:

  • Exhale completely
  • Inhale through your nose… 1, 2, 3, 4
  • Pause, 1, 2, 3, 4
  • Exhale through your nose or mouth…1, 2, 3, 4
  • Pause, 1, 2, 3, 4

Do 4 rounds and rest. Then do another 4 rounds!

If breathing for a count of 5 feels more comfortable for you then go with that!
